Is mold in a house bad?

Yes. Health Canada links damp and moldy homes with irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, coughing, wheezing and worse asthma, and mold slowly damages the materials it grows on. It should be removed and the moisture fixed.

Is mold common in homes? Does every house have mold?

Mold spores are in the air of every home. Visible growth is common wherever surfaces stay damp, such as bathrooms, basements, window frames and attics. Spores are normal. Growth is a sign of a moisture problem.

Is black mold a fungus?

Yes. All molds are fungi. They reproduce by releasing spores and grow on damp organic material such as paper, wood, dust and fabric.

Is black mold on a bathroom ceiling dangerous?

It is usually surface growth caused by shower steam and poor ventilation. It should be cleaned off, because any mold can irritate the airways, and the fan and ventilation fixed so that it does not return.

Is all black mold the dangerous kind?

No. Many molds are black, and colour does not identify the species or the risk. Health Canada does not sort indoor molds into safe and dangerous types. It advises removing any mold growth.

Can black mold be fatal?

For most people mold causes irritation and allergy symptoms, not life-threatening illness. People with severely weakened immune systems can develop serious infections from some molds and should tell their care team. Severe breathing difficulty is an emergency: call 911.

Can black mold cause cancer, seizures, hallucinations or memory loss?

These are not established effects of household mold in public health guidance. The effects with the strongest support are respiratory and irritation symptoms. If you have symptoms like these, see a doctor, because they have many possible causes.

Can mold cause sinus infections, a sore throat, a skin rash or shortness of breath?

Nose, throat and breathing symptoms are the ones Health Canada associates with damp, moldy homes, and skin irritation is commonly reported by sensitive people. See a doctor for persistent symptoms and deal with the mold.

Does black mold affect cats and dogs?

Pets breathe the same air and can be affected by damp, moldy conditions. If a pet has breathing or skin problems, see a vet and mention the mold. Keep pets out of the area during cleanup.

Does black mold have a smell?

Mold of any colour usually smells musty or earthy, like damp soil or wet cardboard. The smell comes from compounds released by active growth, so a musty smell with nothing visible suggests hidden mold.

Does mold spread through a house?

Yes. Mold releases spores that travel on air currents and settle elsewhere, and it grows wherever they land on damp material. It does not spread onto dry surfaces, which is why fixing moisture stops it.

Is black mold airborne or contagious?

Spores become airborne, especially when mold is disturbed. Mold is not contagious between people. It is an environmental exposure, so everyone in the same damp home is exposed to the same thing.

Is everyone affected by mold?

No. People react very differently. Infants, older adults, and people with asthma, allergies or weakened immune systems are more likely to be affected, while others in the same house may notice nothing.

How much mold is acceptable in a house?

There is no official safe amount. Health Canada has not set an exposure limit and advises cleaning up any visible mold. It treats three or fewer patches totalling under one square metre as a small area a householder can generally clean.

What percentage of homes have mold?

There is no single reliable figure, and estimates vary widely with how mold is defined. What matters for your home is whether there is visible growth, a musty smell or a moisture problem.

How do I know if it is black mold?

You cannot tell the species by looking, and you do not need to. If it is growth on a damp surface, with a musty smell, treat it as mold. Dirt wipes away and does not return. Mold comes back if the surface stays damp.

What is the difference between black mold and mildew, green mold or white mold?

They are all molds. Mildew is a common name for flat surface growth. Colour varies with species, age and what it is growing on, and does not indicate the risk. The response is the same for all of them.

Is mold in a house always visible?

No. It often grows inside walls, under flooring, above ceilings and behind furniture. A musty smell, staining, peeling paint or a history of leaks are signs of hidden growth.

Where is mold usually found in homes?

Bathrooms, basements, attics, around windows, under sinks, behind furniture on outside walls, in closets, and anywhere that has had a leak. It follows moisture.

How do I find or detect mold in my house?

Look and smell first: check damp-prone areas, stains and musty spots. A moisture meter or thermal camera finds damp materials that may hide growth. Health Canada does not recommend air testing as a way to find mold.

What causes black mold, and why is mold growing in my house?

Moisture. A leak, condensation on cold surfaces, high humidity, poor ventilation or a past flood that was not dried. Spores are always present and grow when a surface stays damp.

Why is mold growing on furniture and everything in my house?

Humidity in the whole house is too high. That points to a damp basement or crawl space, poor ventilation, an unvented dryer, or a house closed up without heat or air conditioning. Measure the humidity and bring it between 30 and 50 percent.

What causes mold in a house during winter?

Condensation. Warm, moist indoor air meets cold windows, outside walls and attic surfaces and leaves water behind. Lower the indoor humidity, run exhaust fans and keep air moving against outside walls.

Read the full explanation

Why is there black mold in the shower, on walls or on windows?

Those surfaces stay wet or collect condensation. In showers it is soap residue and standing water. On walls and windows it is usually condensation from high indoor humidity, or a leak.

How long does it take mold to form?

Health Canada notes that mold begins to grow within 48 hours where there is excess moisture. It usually becomes visible within one to two weeks.

How long do mold spores live in a house?

Spores can stay dormant for a very long time, years in some cases, and start growing when moisture returns. This is why keeping materials dry matters more than trying to kill spores.

How long does mold last, and does it go away on its own?

It does not go away. Growth continues as long as the material is damp and goes dormant when it dries, ready to start again. It has to be physically removed.

Can mold be completely removed? Does mold remediation really work?

Growth can be removed completely from a building. Spores cannot be eliminated from indoor air, and do not need to be. Remediation works when the moisture source is fixed. Where it is not, mold returns.

Is mold remediation necessary, or is it a scam?

Removing mold and fixing moisture is necessary. What to be wary of is scare tactics, routine air testing sold as essential, and fogging or spraying offered as a complete cure. A proper job removes affected materials and addresses the cause.

Does black mold have to be removed professionally?

Not always. Health Canada says a small area can generally be cleaned by a householder with gloves, eye protection and an N95 respirator. It advises a professional for a patch over three square metres, mold that returns and mold inside walls or ceilings.

Who removes mold? Who do I call for mold in my house?

A restoration or mold remediation contractor removes it. A plumber or roofer may be needed to fix the leak. Tenants should report it to the landlord in writing. An independent environmental consultant can assess it if you want a second opinion.

Who inspects or checks a house for mold?

Restoration contractors, environmental consultants and some home inspectors. An independent consultant who does not also do the removal has no interest in the size of the job.

Who pays for mold remediation?

The property owner, unless the mold results directly from a sudden insured loss, in which case insurance may pay. In a rental the landlord is responsible for repairs. In a condo it depends on where the moisture came from.

What does mold remediation involve? How is mold removed professionally?

The moisture source is fixed, the area is sealed and kept under negative pressure, moldy porous materials are cut out and bagged, remaining surfaces are HEPA vacuumed and cleaned, and the structure is dried and checked.

What is the difference between mold remediation, removal, abatement and mitigation?

In practice they describe the same work. Remediation is the usual industry term, because it includes fixing the cause as well as removing the growth. Mitigation sometimes means the first steps to stop it spreading.

Does mold remediation require a licence or a permit in Ontario?

No. Ontario does not license mold remediation contractors and no permit is needed for the removal itself. Rebuilding afterwards may need a building permit if structure, plumbing or electrical work is involved.

What is a mold remediation certificate or clearance?

A written confirmation after the work, ideally from an independent consultant, that visible growth is gone and the area is dry, sometimes with sampling. It is useful when selling a home.

What mask or respirator should I wear for mold removal?

Health Canada specifies a disposable, well-fitting N95 respirator, with safety glasses or goggles and household gloves, for cleaning small areas. Larger jobs need more protection and containment.

Do mold removal gels, sprays, foggers and machines work?

Gels and sprays can lift surface staining on caulk and tile. Foggers and ozone machines do not remove growth from materials. None of them fixes moisture, so none of them solves the problem alone.

How do I remove mold from clothes or wood?

Clothes: brush off outdoors, wash in the hottest water the fabric allows and dry fully, in the sun if possible. Solid wood: HEPA vacuum, scrub with detergent, dry quickly and sand stubborn spots.

Can cleaning mold make you sick?

It can make symptoms flare, because disturbing mold releases spores. Wear an N95 respirator, eye protection and gloves, dampen the area first, ventilate, and keep sensitive people away.

What should I do if I have been exposed to black mold?

Get out of the damp environment, and see a doctor if you have symptoms, particularly breathing symptoms. Then have the mold removed and the moisture fixed. Symptoms from irritation and allergy usually ease once exposure stops.

How long does a mold inspection or mold test take?

An inspection of a house usually takes one to two hours. If samples are taken, laboratory results typically take a few days.

What can I do if I cannot afford mold removal?

Fix the moisture first, which is often cheap: ventilation, a dehumidifier, a small leak. Clean small areas yourself following Health Canada guidance. Tenants should report it to the landlord. Ask a contractor to stage the work, starting with the cause.

Can I sue for mold in a house?

Possibly, for example against a landlord who did not repair, a seller who concealed a known problem, or a contractor whose work caused it. Whether you have a claim depends on the facts and on time limits. Speak to a lawyer.

Who is responsible for mold in a new house?

In Ontario, new homes carry a statutory warranty administered by Tarion, and water penetration and defects in work or materials may be covered within set time limits. Report mold to the builder and to Tarion promptly, and check the deadlines.

Is mold removal tax deductible in Canada?

Generally not for your own home, where repairs are a personal expense. For a rental or business property, repairs are normally deductible expenses. Ask an accountant about your situation.
